Sunshine State TESOL: A Couple of Notes

May 14, 2012

Sunshine State TESOL’s conference ended Saturday, May 12.  I found it quite worthwhile and better than I expected.  There has been an increased emphasis on vocabulary in recent years, and it was reflected in the conference.   Three of the plenary speeches by Kate Kinsella, Keith Folse, and Randi Reppen included a strong emphasis on vocabulary.  One of Kinsella’s emphases was on a structured approach to using academic vocabulary in correct structures in the exercises and in the structuring of the activities in class.  Folse presented some principles for including vocabulary and emphasized that all language teachers need to teach vocabulary.  Reppen showed how to use corpa to improve classroom materials and student learning.  I plan to try out some of her suggestions starting tomorrow.
